CHEYCO LEIDMANN, UN CREADOR QUE ANTICIPÓ PRESENTE

Ya en los años 70 del siglo pasado cuando tomé contacto con su obra fotográfica en lujosos y costosos libros de erotismo en arte, se advertía la diferencia. Tras la renovación de lo digital, que introdujo otra forma de «realidad» o de verosimilitud en torno a lo que denominamos Real, ya en los 90, LEIDMANN -con quien desde hace unos años tenemos contacto por correo- adquiere su verdadera estatura por el simple acto del reconocimiento.
Dicho de otro modo, lo que muchos autores presentan como novedad desde hace una década, Leidmann lo hacía 30 años atrás con un peculiar procesamiento analógico. Es necesario hablar en extenso sobre su obra, bien norteamericana: combina hiperrealismo, erotismo, surrealismo urbano, moda y producción fotográfica chic sin artificiosidad, verismo urbano, fotografía publicitaria, el colorismo de neón estilo Las Vegas. Y la mirada apocalíptica, central, crucial en su forma de interpretar con sentido común y reflexión lo que es hoy el mundo y, sobre todo, su propio país como originalidad cultural.
Hay que sumar el acento sensual y erótico en arte, un barroco cromático brillante pero con residuos ambientales presentes y desiertos calientes y con chatarra, sensuales modelos femeninas, el trip de las drogas psicodélicas, lo brillante del plástico y lo artificioso que pretende imitar las pirámides de Egipto o la Torre Eiffel, una puesta en escena que en algunos aspectos precede a David Lynch, el desierto, la chatarra y, vuelvo a repetir, lo Apocalíptico. De algún modo Trump es un presidente que viene a representarse a sí mismo como parodia grave del estilo Leidmann.

Cheyco Leidmann divides his time between Paris and the United States, many are familiar with his classic Foxy Lady book published in the 80s , his first monograph,and voted by Vogue as a cult book, it was his first success. Leidmann created a uniquely new avant-garde visual style of magical images of cutting edge expressionism.He marked the universe of photography with his impudence, and his provocations. He has influenced filmmakers, creative directors, designers,musicians and a generation of photographers.Following that first book would be seven others.A lover of bold hyper-real colors and saturated, fluorescent tints and a skilful creator of play between light and shadow,he sparked the imagination of many art fans. The erotic and uninhibited agression with which his images are imbued to the absolute limit, transform even the most innocent observer who instinctively withdraws his glaze into that of an obstinate voyeur who, almost without realizing it, finds himself pulled into a dreamlike dimension where physical presence provides a grip on the most unspeakable fantasies, and in which it is difficult to distinguish between victim and perpetrator. The game, which began with an ironic sense, becomes caught up in a vortex of folly from which one would like to exit quickly.Already famous in the eighties for his long resume of works and publications, by force of masterful compositions,he visually explores an imaginary world with irony and imagination. Wicked, awesome and extreme, a work wich revels in excess and contradiction.
Cheyco Leidmann’s career traversed diverse genres .After studying film, Cheyco Leidmann embarks writing scenarios,does performance art, and assigned stills. As a visual artist, his trademark name stands for the strength and power of the images and the quality and vigor of his work.Cheyco Leidmann is an artist who has a magic art of staging a grotesque world, prompting the viewer to enter his erotic and burlesque theater, creating an unreal world where illusion and reality meet and imposes once eyes. He portrays a no-mans land populated by a series of women sheathed in plastic bodysuits with spike heels, bright red lipstick and polished nails, women-objects subjected to any- and everything.Voluptuous women, with oversized stilettos, bodies locked, wrapped and faces maimed to make them unrecognizable, he imagines a place surreal and sometimes upsetting where violence and sex dominates.Although his style got copied,admired, critizised, it grew and remains immediately recognizable amongst all.
In more recent years, he carried out a sort of social analysis through explicit and disturbing images that show the “toxyttycity” of modern life. It was the beginning of Cheyco Leidmann’s new publication *TOXYTT* in which he imposes his vision of the real world with an angle of anxiety, anticipation and the painful discontinuity between the reassuring darkness of the earth and the hostile light. His work incites the viewer more than ever, but he has replaced his tongue-in-cheek playfulness with the hard edges of anguish and expectancy. This new interpretation of his latest series differs in that from the Leidmann we’ve gotten used to.His artistic vision footprint is offensive and risk-taking . It has won him many prestigious awards.
