Tina Lugo es una artista que nos gusta, sus ilustraciones son provocativas, totalmente inolvidables y un gran éxito en Instagram. Tina se inspira en el movimiento de arte japonés Ero Guru Nansensu, que se refiere al erotismo, lo grotesco y absurdo -una santa trinidad de cosas excelentes.
Hablamos con su saber acerca de cómo la gente reacciona a su trabajo. Por un lado, la gente se sorprende, y por el otro sienten como «esperar lo mejor estando en esto de una manera sexual»

Eh, Tina, ¿de dónde sacas esas ideas?
«Muchas de mis ideas provienen de los movimientos Ero Guro de la década de 1920 de Japón, junto con la influencia de la escena pop y referencias a la cultura Kink.
¿Qué tipo de reacciones has tenido a tu trabajo?
«He tenido algunas reacciones de valor de choque seguro, pero alrededor del 90 por ciento de los resultados han sido muy positivos y de apoyo. Lo mejor sería cuando he tenido a los aficionados cerca mío en una demostración y me dicen que «tu trabajo realmente resuena conmigo y me ayudó a través de este difícil momento que estaba un poco teniendo», o «esto ha hecho que yo extienda mi sexualidad y quiero explorar variaciones Kink y no ocultarlas más. Estas reacciones realmente me han inspirado para seguir adelante y hablar más con mi base de fans sobre lo que los motiva.»
¿Por qué piensa el arte o la cultura de inspiración japonesa es tan popular en Occidente?
«Creo que es popular porque gran parte de ella no oculta lo que es. Una gran cantidad de literatura erótica está a la vista y reconoce sus antecedentes históricos en Japón. Para mí, personalmente, fue muy refrescante, ya que hay mucho tabú llevado sobre los hombros de Norteamérica. Japón parece estar siempre cambiando, y es el establecimiento con su cultura juvenil muy en tendencia y creo que tiene una gran aceptación para el mundo occidental, que son consumidores masivos de «qué hay de nuevo?». Hay también una precisión y dedicación que atrae a mí sobre su propia cultura y que resuena con la idea de que deben lanzarse un 100 por ciento en lo que vos elegís hacer en la vida con el fin de mejorar y, en última instancia tener éxito.»
¿Qué te gusta mirar del arte?
«Todo. Fui al MET (METROPOLITAN) y MOMA (MUSEO DE ARTE MODERNO) para crecer mucho y aún así nunca me enfermó de lo mismo. Me encanta todo, desde el período Bizantino al Barroco (que me proporciona muchas referencias figurativas) a lo contemporáneo. Mis artistas favoritos de todos los tiempos son Keith Haring, Jackson Pollock, Yoshitoshi, y Marina Abramovic.»

Tina Lugo is an artist we love, her illustrations are provocative, completely unforgettable and a big hit on Instagram. Tina draws inspiration from the Ero Guru Nansensu Japanese art movement, it pertains to eroticism, the grotesque and nonsense – a holy trinity of excellent things.
We spoke to her find out about how people react to her work. On the one hand people are shocked, and on the other they’re like “wait maybe I’m into this in a sexual way?”

Hey Tina, where do you get these ideas from?
Many of my ideas come from the Ero Guro movement of 1920s Japan, along with influence from the Kink scene and pop culture references.
What kind of reactions have you had to your work?
I’ve had some shock value reactions for sure but about 90 percent of the outcomes have been extremely supportive and positive. The best would be when I have had fans approach me at a show and say “your work really resonates with me and helped me through this tough time I was having recently ” or “this has made me open up about my sexuality and want to explore kinks and not hide anymore.” Those reactions have really inspired me to keep going and talk to more of my fan base about what makes them tick
Why do you think Japanese-inspired art or culture is so popular in the West?
I think it’s popular because much of it doesn’t hide what it is. A lot of erotica is in plain sight and acknowledges its historical background in Japan. To me personally, that was highly refreshing since there’s so much taboo carried on American shoulders. Japan seems to be always changing, and is very trend setting with its youth culture and I think that has mass appeal for the western world, who are mass consumers of “what’s new?”. There’s also a precision and dedication that appeals to me about their culture and I resonate with the idea that you must throw yourself 100 percent into whatever you choose to do in life in order to improve and ultimately be successful.
What art do you like to look at?
Everything. I went to the Met and Moma so much growing up and still never got sick of it. I love everything from the Byzantine period to the Baroque (which provides me with many figural references) to the contemporary. My favorite artists of all time are Keith Haring, Jackson Pollock, Yoshitoshi, and Marina Abramovic.
